How to take care of your braces

How to take care of your braces?

You should pay more attention when brushing, in order to make sure that all the areas around the brackets are thoroughly cleaned. There are special brushes, which help you reach between the brackets and under the arch wires – interdental brushes. Oral irrigators (water flossers) are often useful in removing food residues from around the teeth. Mouthwashes with a high content of fluoride and antibacterial substances (i.e. chlorhexidine) help reduce the microbial level. If the teeth are not cleaned properly, the gum increases in volume, becomes painful, the teeth move slower, and the treatment takes longer. Any cleaning tool is useful, if properly used.

What foods are allowed if you have braces?

Sticky foods should be avoided: caramels, chewing gum, Turkish delight, jellybeans; crunchy foods: peanuts, nuts, seeds, popcorn; hard or raw foods, such as apples and carrots, will be cut into smaller pieces; foods which are difficult to chew: bagels, bread crust, pizza crust.

All these foods can cause the detaching of the brackets from the teeth and a longer orthodontic treatment, and implicitly higher costs, which is why they should be eliminated during treatment.

In order to avoid new cavities, already favored through the mere presence of the braces, there should be a significant reduction in the consumption of foods with high sugar content, such as: candy, cake, ice cream, chocolate, sweet still or carbonated soft drinks. However, if you do choose to eat these foods, cleaning the teeth immediately is mandatory.
