When should the first orthodontic check-up be done?
The child’s first consultation in a dental practice usually starts around the age of 3. The general dentist is the first one to have a contact with the child; obtaining a relationship of cooperation and friendship is very important for the future collaboration. The specialist orthodontist intervenes in supervising the child a little later, usually during the period when the milk teeth change, after 6-7 years.
During the consultation, the orthodontist assesses:
- The development of the child’s maxillaries;
- The presence of harmful habits, affecting the normal growth of teeth and bones: thumb sucking, lip biting, mouth breathing, etc.;
- How the replacement of the milk teeth occurs, so that the permanent teeth eruption process can take place in favorable positions from the beginning;
- Early detection of the factors that negatively influence teeth and arches.
Early treatment, before all the milk teeth change, in the debut phase of the dental-maxillary anomaly is very important.
The child aged 7-8 has to be consulted by a specialist orthodontist, to detect and stop the development of certain problems which can worsen or sometimes become irreversible!
An early orthodontic treatment will prevent the occurrence of dental, gingival or maxillary joint problems and shorten the required period for wearing the orthodontic braces.
